Last night I had the pleasure of seeing the band Big Business. I love it when you expect nothing from an opening band you’ve never heard of, and they blow you away. It was a Monday night in Minneapolis at the Fine Line (Nobody ever plays First Avenue anymore). I had planned on meeting my old friend and drummer Jay at the show. Low and behold our old bass player Jim was there as well. “We’re gettin the band back together.” It should come as no surprise, because we used to cover several Melvins songs. Anyway, Big Business opened up for the Melvins as well as some rap guy and Men of Porn. If you’ve never heard of Big Business, check them out. It’s just a guy on bass, who looks freakishly like Buzzo, and has the coolest sounding distorted bass, and a drummer who sounds like Dale Crover on steroids. If you took Dale Crover, Dave Grohl and mixed them together and added 10% more heavy…that’s him. Let me just say that the drummer from Big Business is one of the heaviest, coolest, talented drummers I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve seen about 15 Melvins shows so far (see my ticket stubs) and I’ve always enjoyed Dale Crover’s drumming. Last night Big Business played about 5 or 6 songs then Buzzo and Dale came out. Two drummers! This guy kept up with EVERYTHING Dale did. Matter of fact at one point I thought to myself Dale is trying to keep up with him! I also think if Dale ever died, this guy could take over seemlessly. It was a drummers wet dream. Melvins played a lot of new stuff as well as some old classics. Everything was very upbeat, no noise. It appears as these two bands are perfect touring mates. I don’t think Kevin will be missed at all. At one point of the show you have two Buzzo looking dudes and then you had the cloned Dale drummers. It was spectacular. And when you think two drummers, Grateful Dead comes to mind. Oh, no no no. This was precise, well planned out, insane display of power and spot on timing. I wonder how long they had to work on that. It seemed like they’ve been playing together forever. Very impressive. Well, I’ve gushed enough. Thanks again to the Melvins for turning me onto Big Business. If these two bands come to your town, don’t miss it. ![]()
